Just across the bay from Sea Arch headquarters is the beautiful coastal town of Lyme Regis. It’s the fossil capital of the UK.
From Victorian times, people travelled from all over the UK to make discoveries. One of the most influential paleontologists of the time was a woman called Mary Anning, who worked in Lyme. She made thousands of discoveries – including the first ichthyosaur skeleton to be correctly identified.
If you’ve ever said the tongue twister: She sells sea shells on the sea shore, you were describing Mary Anning.
Her finds on the Jurassic coast never made her rich – and she wasn’t admitted into scientific circles because she was a woman. Sexism – there’s something the world would be a more beautiful thing without.
